Thanksgiving holiday prompts changes to city services in Hampton

Many city services and facilities in Hampton will be affected by the Thanksgiving holiday. City offices will be closed on Thursday, November 27, for Thanksgiving and Friday, November 28, for an administrative day.

Trash and recycling collections scheduled for Thursday, November 27, will occur a day early on Wednesday, November 26. There will be no collections on Friday, November 28; those will take place on Monday, December 1. Collections originally set for Monday, December 1, are rescheduled to Wednesday, December 3.

Street sweeping planned for Thursday, November 27, is moved up to Friday, November 21. The Yard Waste Site and landfill will both be closed on Thursday and Friday.

City schools are closed from Wednesday through Friday of Thanksgiving week. Libraries and community centers also close both days. The Fort Monroe Pool will not open during this period.

The Treasurer’s Office and Commissioner of the Revenue’s Office close at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday before remaining closed for the holiday. DMV Select is also closed both days.

The Charles H. Taylor Visual Arts Center remains closed until a new exhibit opens Saturday after Thanksgiving. Human Services is closed Thursday and Friday as well.

Peninsula Health District clinics are open only until 1 p.m. on Wednesday before closing for the remainder of the week.

City parks remain open during the holiday period. However, Bluebird Gap Farm and Sandy Bottom Nature Center are closed on Thanksgiving Day only.

Other closures include the Hampton History Museum and Hampton Carousel on Thanksgiving Day. Public golf courses—the Hamptons and The Woodlands—will operate until 1 p.m. that day but resume regular hours Friday.

The James T. Wilson Fishing Pier closes at 6 p.m. Wednesday before reopening at 8 a.m. Friday following its closure on Thanksgiving Day.

Hampton Roads Transit buses follow a Sunday schedule on Thanksgiving Day and switch to a Saturday schedule the next day (for more information visit https://gohrt.com/).

The Abram Frink Jr. Community Center will be closed from June 15 to June 22 for annual gym floor maintenance. Pass holders can use the James City County Recreation Center during this period. The center will reopen on June 23.

James City County Parks & Recreation will celebrate its 45th anniversary with a free community event on July 18 featuring games, music and themed fitness classes. The department has grown significantly since its founding in 1981.
