Today, during a press conference at Newport News Police Department (NNPD) Headquarters, Mayor Phillip Jones and Chief Steve Drew presented statistics regarding a reduction in gun violence. The mid-year data indicates a 55% decrease in homicides in the city compared to the same period last year.

In his remarks, Mayor Jones cited a commitment he made during his State of the City address in March to reduce gun violence in the city, primarily focusing on homicides by 15% over an 18-month period.

“I am encouraged by the results to date as we continue to implement innovative programs and strategies to address gun violence in our city,” said Mayor Jones. “My ask of our community is for you to continue to build forward with me by strengthening our community partnerships, uplifting our youth and young adults together, and supporting the important work of our dedicated officers.”

Another positive trend was reflected by a decrease in shootings within the city. There has been a 31% decrease in shootings compared to the same period last year.

“I want to thank the men and women of our department for their hard work and dedication. Their effort along with our community partners have been instrumental in our achievements and reductions. In addition, I want to recognize the citizens of Newport News for their trust and support,” said Chief Drew.

Chief Drew also highlighted the city’s 2024 clearance rates as determined by the FBI nationwide. While the national clearance rate established by the FBI is 52.3% for homicides, NNPD has solved 88.9%.

The police department’s focused efforts on gun violence reduction strategies—including Operation Blue Line, Operation Cease Fire, a strategic focus on violent offenders, Real Time Crime Center/Technology, training and outreach efforts, and valued community partnerships—have played a pivotal role in Newport News’ success.
