Leonard Sledge has been appointed as Hampton’s director of economic development, marking a return to a role he previously held from 2013 to 2018. City Manager Mary Bunting expressed excitement about Sledge's return, stating, “We are thrilled that Leonard has agreed to return and take our city to the next level of economic growth.”
Sledge's professional journey has taken him to various locations, including a stint as the executive director of the Henry County Development Authority in Atlanta and as Richmond’s director of economic development. Over the course of his career, Sledge has been involved in projects totaling $3.9 billion in announced capital investment and creating 9,600 new jobs.
In his own words, Sledge expressed gratitude and enthusiasm for the opportunity, saying, “I am both thankful and excited to once again have the privilege of serving as the director of economic development for the City of Hampton.” He emphasized his commitment to creating economic opportunities that benefit the entire city.
Sledge’s impressive track record includes accomplishments in Richmond such as the adoption of the Strategic Plan for Equitable Economic Development and various successful development projects. In Hampton, his previous projects have included significant developments like The Vanguard Brewpub & Distillery and the Kroger-anchored redevelopment of RiverPointe.
Outside his role in economic development, Sledge is actively involved in various professional organizations, serving on the Boards of the International Economic Development Council and the Virginia Economic Developers Association.
A product of Hampton City Schools, Sledge holds degrees from Morehouse College, Georgia Tech, and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Phoenix. He is married to Tiffanye, his college sweetheart, and together they have three adult children.
