Sawyer Named ECSU Sports Information Director

The Elizabeth City State University Athletic Department has announced the appointment of Chris Sawyer as Sports Information Director.  He will be responsible for the promotion and coverage of all Vikings' athletic programs, while handling website management, social media, gameday operations, live video and stat collection.  Sawyer comes to the Vikings after, most recently, serving as the Assistant Director of Athletic Media Relations at Hampden-Sydney College.  While at H-SC, he was responsible for the promotion of the Tigers' Lacrosse, Soccer, Tennis and Swimming programs, while maintaining the athletic website, creating gameday graphics, game recaps, and statistics.  In addition, Sawyer created and hosted Inside Tigers Lacrosse and On the Court with Tigers Tennis. 

"We are excited with the addition of Chris to the Viking Family," said Interim Director of Athletics James DuBose, Jr.  "His experience will help enhance the exposure of our department and athletic programs, while bringing stability to the sports information role.  Chris has played a role in increasing the coverage of several college and universities, and we know he will do the same here at ECSU."

Prior to H-SC, Chris was the Sports Information Director for The Apprentice School in Newport News, VA, where he was responsible for the Athletics website, as well as managing all media related items, promotion of the athletic department and its student-athletes, graphics, game previews, game recaps, statistics, and served as the creator and host of Apprentice Athletics Coach's Corner Show.  During his tenure, Chris increased the exospore of the Builders' programs throughout the Hampton Roads area. 

Sawyer also spent time at Lackawanna College, in Scranton, PA, as their Sports Information Director from 2019-2020.  While at Lackawanna, her helped start the LCFAN Network and served as the co-host of the weekly Falcons Corner show. He also served as the color analyst for Lackawanna Football and Basketball live broadcasts. When the Falcons Football team played in the 2019 NJCAA National Championship, Chris worked closely with CBS Sports Network to develop championship game day segments and videos. Additionally, he was involved with the athletic department's website transition from Presto to Sidearm, while increasing the social media following of Lackawanna College Athletics. 

While in Scranton, Chris promoted eight Junior College Football All-Americans, twenty NEFC Football All-Conference selections, along with the NEFC Football Coach of the Year and NEFC Player of the Year.  He also promoted three wrestling NJCAA National Tournament qualifiers, the EPAC and Region XIX Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Year, Men's and Women's Soccer EPAC and Region XIX All-Conference selections, along with the EPAC and Region XIX Volleyball All-Conference selections.      

Before becoming the SID at Lackawanna College, Sawyer founded The Small College Sports Report in Virginia Beach, VA and served as its Executive Director.  At the SCSR, he covered small colleges that were members of the NJCAA, USCAA and National Christian Collegiate Athletic Association (NCCAA).  His coverage area encompassed mainly the southeast, spanning from Virginia down to Georgia and, on occasion, Tennessee.  He also served as the host of The Small College Sports Report Radio Show, which aired on Blog Talk Radio and local FM and AM stations in Hampton Roads. 

In addition, Chris played a role in the creation of the athletic program at Bryant & Stratton College in Virginia Beach, VA and is currently serving his second term on the Board of The Hampton Roads Sports Media Hall of Fame.

Sawyer earned an Associate's Degree from Bryant & Stratton College in 1996, while going on to earn a Bachelor's Degree from Bellevue University and a Master's Degree from The University of Cincinnati. Chris and his wife, Ryan, of Virginia Beach, have been married for 17 years and have two sons Peyton (17), Jaxon (16) and a daughter Reagan (14).
