As the summer travel season approaches, it’s important to be aware of new federal requirements for identification. Beginning May 7, 2025, the federal government will require a REAL ID compliant driver’s license or identification card for certain activities. The REAL ID Act, enacted in 2005 following recommendations from the 9/11 Commission, establishes standards for state-issued licenses and ID cards to enhance national security.
In Virginia, REAL ID compliant licenses and ID cards have been available since 2018, but will become mandatory in some instances starting May 7, 2025. Activities requiring REAL ID include boarding domestic flights, entering secure federal facilities, and accessing military bases. Some military bases may already require REAL ID or another approved form of ID.
Having a REAL ID is optional in Virginia. Individuals with other federally accepted identification, such as a valid U.S. passport or military ID, may not need a REAL ID unless they travel by plane. Those seeking a REAL ID should apply soon, particularly if lacking other accepted forms of ID.
To apply for a REAL ID, individuals can start the application online or fill out a paper application at a Virginia DMV customer service center. Required documents include proof of identity, proof of Virginia residency, proof of legal presence, and proof of Social Security number if issued. There’s a $10 fee, plus the standard cost of the license or ID card.
Virginia residents may continue using a standard license or ID, which will display “Federal Limits Apply” upon renewal. However, it’s essential to have a federal accepted identification when traveling domestically by air or accessing certain federal facilities.
