The Portsmouth Police Department has been awarded Nationally Advanced Accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA). This recognition is considered a leading standard in public safety.
The department reached this milestone after more than 25 years of effort. Chief Stephen Jenkins made accreditation a key objective, and over the last two years, Grant and Accreditation Manager Tonya Hopkins worked with command staff to ensure all policies met CALEA’s requirements.
Accreditation by CALEA means that the Portsmouth Police Department complies with hundreds of standards, participates in on-site assessments, and shows ongoing commitment to improving its services.
“This achievement reflects the dedication of every member of the Portsmouth Police Department,” said Chief Jenkins. “It signifies our commitment to provide the best service possible to our community in every circumstance. Accreditation is more than a seal of approval or recognition– it’s a pledge to uphold the highest standards every day.”
With this accreditation, Portsmouth joins other law enforcement agencies nationwide recognized for their professionalism and accountability. The department states that this step reinforces its mission to serve with integrity and protect with compassion.
