The Portsmouth Partnership has launched a new initiative aimed at enhancing safety and visibility in Downtown Portsmouth. The Safe & Secure Downtown: High Street Corridor Safety Improvement Program is part of the Portsmouth Main Street Program and focuses on improving security, safety, and nighttime visibility for properties along the High Street Corridor.
The program involves two main components. First, there will be enhancements to downtown medians through tree lighting. Second, lighting and security upgrades will be offered to individual businesses in the downtown corridor.
For community lighting enhancement, Portsmouth Main Street plans to use uplighting on trees along the High Street median. Local businesses can sponsor these tree lighting upgrades for $5,000 per block, with sponsors receiving recognition for their contributions.
Business owners are also encouraged to make their own lighting and security improvements. Participating businesses or property owners will receive a $1,000 participation bonus for qualifying upgrades. The Partnership will assist participants with city permitting processes and coordinate with a single vendor to streamline improvements. This program is available to businesses within the designated Portsmouth Main Street boundaries—specifically the 100–700 blocks of High Street between King and Queen Streets.
Qualified improvements include exterior lighting installations at both front and rear of buildings, security camera installation or upgrades, and connectivity to the Portsmouth Police Department’s Real-Time Crime Monitoring Center.
“This program is a strategic investment in the future of Downtown Portsmouth,” said Michelle Wren, Partnership Executive Director. “By helping property owners and businesses invest in security and visibility, we’re working to create a safer, more vibrant environment that supports long-term economic vitality.”
Key dates for the program include interest forms being accepted until June 15, 2025; contractor site visits scheduled for June 20, 2025; and a final application deadline set for June 25, 2025.
The Portsmouth Partnership comprises volunteer business, professional, and civic leaders dedicated to promoting economic growth in Portsmouth. Its Main Street Program focuses on revitalizing the historic High Street corridor by supporting small business growth and enhancing public spaces.
