At approximately 6:06 a.m. on November 18, James City County Police and Fire personnel responded to a collision involving a bicyclist and a vehicle at the intersection of Monticello Avenue and Casey Boulevard.
Emergency medical teams provided aid at the scene. The bicyclist was then airlifted by Life Evac to the Medical Center of Virginia in Richmond, where he remains in critical condition.
The James City County Police Department Crash Team began an investigation into the incident. According to initial findings, a 62-year-old man from James City County was riding an E-Bike on Ironbound Road and entered the intersection against a red traffic signal. He was struck by a 2008 GMC Envoy driven by a 72-year-old man from York County, who had a green light while passing through the intersection.
After the collision, the driver of the GMC Envoy stopped immediately. Several witnesses also stopped and contacted Peninsula Regional Emergency Communications. To ensure safety and allow for investigative work, westbound traffic on Monticello Avenue was temporarily diverted.
Both vehicles involved—the GMC Envoy and the E-Bike—were transported to the James City County Law Enforcement Center for further examination as part of standard procedure. A Williamsburg-James City County Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney also responded to the scene upon request from the Crash Team.
Currently, no charges have been filed, and authorities say that “the investigation remains ongoing.”
