Nine communities in Virginia have received the Advancing Virginia Main Street Designation, according to an announcement from Governor Glenn Youngkin. Among those recognized is The Phoebus Partnership in Hampton, which will now benefit from a range of specialized services intended to aid downtown development. These include market analysis, economic strategies, design assistance, and façade improvement renderings for redevelopment projects.
Governor Youngkin commented on the program’s long-standing role in community development: “The Virginia Main Street program has been instrumental in nurturing small businesses, growing local economies, and preserving historic downtowns for nearly 40 years,” said Governor Glenn Youngkin. “I applaud these newly designated Virginia Main Street communities for their commitment to revitalization, and I look forward to your community’s continued success.”
The Virginia Main Street program was established in 1985 with the goal of supporting downtown revitalization by building on each community’s heritage and assets. Over time, participating communities have attracted more than $2.6 billion in combined public and private investment and created upwards of 27,000 jobs.
Hampton officials expressed support for The Phoebus Partnership’s designation, emphasizing expectations for increased economic development and enhanced opportunities for historic preservation as a result of the new status.
