Newport News Public Schools (NNPS) has announced that Riverside Elementary fifth grader Amaris Thompson is a student spotlight honoree. This recognition is for consistently demonstrating the school’s motto of being safe, respectful, responsible, and kind.
According to NNPS, Thompson is recognized for her strong behavior, consistent attendance, and timely completion of schoolwork. She enjoys participating in the Boomin’ Bears Drumline as this year’s captain and said the group is “really fun” and helps her feel more “confident.” Additionally, she participates in Girls Who Code and serves as a morning show host, promoting kindness and respect while excelling in reading, writing, math, and science.
Teachers at Riverside Elementary highlight Thompson’s leadership skills and balanced temperament. The school’s music teacher noted she is “very balanced” and knows when to speak and when to be “respectful.” Outside of school activities include drawing, playing outdoors, and socializing with friends. Having attended Riverside since kindergarten, Thompson plans to continue her musical pursuits in middle school.
