Newport News Public Schools (NNPS) announced that the summer 2025 graduates received their diplomas during a ceremony held on August 5 at Heritage High School.

According to NNPS, a total of 51 students from Newport News’ five high schools completed their diploma requirements and were recognized at the summer graduation ceremony. School Board Chairman Dr. Terri Best, Superintendent Dr. Michele Mitchell, and Director of High School Leadership Dr. Eleanor Blowe spoke at the event, with each school’s principal presenting diplomas. Blowe highlighted graduates who balanced full-time work, family responsibilities, language challenges, or personal and financial hardships while studying in their spare time. Family, friends, and community members celebrated the accomplishments as students turned tassels and received diplomas.

“This moment is special,” said Blowe. “And not just because of the caps and gowns, but because of what the caps and gowns represent. Tonight we are celebrating a group of students who did not give up. A group who chose to finish what they started no matter how long it took or what obstacles stood in the way.”

NNPS offers six high schools and Virtual Virginia for students in grades nine through twelve, providing a comprehensive curriculum that develops both general knowledge and specialized skills. According to NNPS, programs prepare students for college, careers, or technical education with courses in core subjects, advanced placement, occupational specialties, athletics, and extracurricular activities.

Newport News Public Schools serves about 26,000 students across 40 schools, including early childhood centers, elementary, middle, high, and combination schools. Over 1,500 students speak a language other than English within the district. The district employs roughly 3,900 teachers, administrators, and support staff and focuses on preparing all students to graduate college-, career-, and citizen-ready. NNPS provides early learning programs, advanced science labs, and educational technology to support student and teacher success. The seven-member elected School Board governs the district with Dr. Michele Mitchell serving as superintendent. Board meetings are public and include structured opportunities for citizen input.
