The City of Newport News is inviting residents and business owners to contribute to the future development of Jefferson Avenue. The Department of Planning is calling for applications for a newly established Citizen Advisory Committee (CAC) that will guide sustainable growth and revitalization efforts in the area between Mercury Boulevard and J. Clyde Morris Boulevard.

The CAC aims to repurpose, reimagine, redevelop, and revitalize the aging commercial strip along Jefferson Avenue. The city is looking for a diverse group of individuals within the study area who are interested in reviewing current conditions, contributing to a shared vision, and recommending community-focused improvements.

Committee members will participate in five structured work sessions from July to December 2025, each lasting no more than 90 minutes. If applications exceed 18 participants, members will be selected by lottery to ensure fairness. Notifications for selected committee members will be sent by July 1, 2025.

The application period closes on Saturday, June 28. Those not selected can still engage with the planning process through additional opportunities for input.

For more information or to apply, visit the official website: South Central Jefferson Avenue Area Study | Newport News, VA – Official Website.

The South Central Jefferson Avenue Study aims to produce an Area Plan that aligns with community values concerning future growth and redevelopment. Relevant materials such as a project fact sheet and boundary map are accessible online.
