Newport News opens facilities for residents amid expected heat wave

In Newport News, Virginia, city officials are taking measures to help residents cope with an anticipated heat wave starting today. The city has advised individuals to seek relief at designated facilities and limit outdoor activities. Staying hydrated and taking frequent breaks when outdoors is recommended. Additionally, residents are encouraged to check on friends and neighbors who may be vulnerable to heat-related illnesses.

The Pearl Bailey, Main Street, and Grissom Libraries have extended hours from Monday through Thursday, 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., and Sunday from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Community centers such as Brittingham-Midtown and Denbigh are available Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The Downing-Gross Cultural Arts Center will operate Monday through Friday between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Additionally, the Four Oaks Day Service Center remains open daily from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
