The City of Newport News has announced the launch of its Fall 2025 Contractors Academy, a workshop series designed to support small businesses in competing for government contracts. The five-session program will run from September 25 through November 6 at the Newport News Main Street Library, offering sessions every Thursday evening.
The academy aims to guide small and emerging business leaders through identifying contracting opportunities, preparing proposals, and understanding procurement procedures. Participants can attend the full series or select individual workshops according to their needs.
“Small businesses are the backbone of our local economy,” said Mayor Phillip Jones. “Through programs like the Contractors Academy, we’re helping entrepreneurs gain the tools and expertise to pursue city contracts and expand their businesses right here in Newport News.”
In addition to the Contractors Academy, Newport News will hold the “Serve the City: Food Service Provider Forum” on October 9 and 23. This event is intended for restaurant owners, caterers, food truck operators, and other food service professionals who want insight into how the city procures food services. Speakers will include representatives from various city departments and health districts.
“Our goal is to meet small business owners where they are and help them grow from there,” said City Manager Alan K. Archer. “Whether they’re new to government contracting or are ready to compete, we’re here to provide training and guidance to help them succeed.”
Looking ahead, the city plans to offer advanced business development sessions in Spring 2026 that will address financing, insurance, and other essential topics.
These initiatives reflect Newport News’ ongoing commitment to fostering economic development by providing local business owners with access to necessary resources and support.
