The Newport News City Council has approved a change to the Vehicle License Fee (VLF) billing schedule. Starting in 2026, the VLF due date will shift from December 5 to June 5. The council made this decision at its meeting on October 14.

According to city officials, the new schedule is intended to make the process more efficient for both taxpayers and city staff. The change aims to cut down on the number of bills generated for vehicles sold before January 1, which will reduce the need for issuing refunds.

As part of the revised system, vehicle license fees will now be due every year on June 5. Vehicles acquired after January 15 will be subject to a prorated fee. Refunds will still be available for vehicles that are sold, traded, or otherwise disposed of within the same calendar year.

City staff plan to inform residents about these changes through various channels. Efforts will include email notifications, updates on the city’s website, posts on social media, and engagement with local media outlets.

“City staff will launch a comprehensive communications campaign to ensure residents are aware of the new due date and understand the proration and refund processes. Outreach will include email notifications, updates to the city’s website, social media, and media engagement.”
