The City of Newport News has appointed Jody Saunders as the new Director of Communications. Saunders, who previously served as Chief Communications Officer with the Virginia Beach Police Department, will replace Cleder Jones. Jones is retiring next month after more than 40 years with the city.

Saunders will join the City Manager’s Executive Leadership Team and oversee communications strategy, public relations, and media relations for Newport News. Her responsibilities include managing marketing operations, tourism, the 311 Center, and a local television station. Saunders brings over 15 years of experience in strategic planning and crisis management from her tenure at VBPD.

City Manager Alan K. Archer expressed enthusiasm about Saunders’ appointment: “I am thrilled to welcome Jody to the City of Newport News,” he said. “Her experience, leadership, and dedication to public service will make her an invaluable asset to our city as we continue to grow and strengthen our relationship with the community.”

Saunders also shared her excitement about her new role: “I am honored to join such a dynamic team and look forward to working closely with the city’s leadership and community members to share important news and information,” she stated. She acknowledged Cleder Jones’ contributions as a tireless advocate for the city.
