Newport News Public Schools and the City of Newport News have announced a new phase in their partnership, aimed at enhancing innovation, education, and community support. This initiative includes Old Dominion University’s (ODU) expansion of its Innovation Lab at Brooks Crossing Innovation and Opportunity Center (BCIOC), which will now occupy a larger space.
Dr. Kipp Rogers, NNPS Chief Academic Officer, stated, “This next chapter shows what’s possible when a city, a university, and a school division work side by side with a shared purpose.” He emphasized that the expansion is more than just physical growth; it represents an investment in students’ futures through programs like the Maritime Engineering and Environmental Studies Academy (MEESA).
The BCIOC facility will transition into the U-Thrive Center this summer. This center aims to be a community hub for youth and vulnerable populations. Dr. Karen Sanzo from ODU expressed excitement about continuing STEM education programs at Brooks Crossing.
Summer programming at BCIOC will be paused during the move. However, partnerships with local libraries and learning spaces will ensure continued STEM opportunities for families.
The U-Thrive Center is supported by organizations such as the National League of Cities and Bloomberg American Sustainable Cities. It builds on initiatives like Youth T.H.R.I.V.E., aiming to provide quality services to empower residents.
City Manager Alan K. Archer commented on the transformation: “Brooks Crossing has long been a place of innovation and collaboration.”
Newport News officials express gratitude to ODU and NNPS for their role in this development. The city plans to engage with community members to shape the center’s future.
