Winter weather preparations are underway in Newport News as the city responds to an approaching storm. City offices, libraries, recreation facilities, and the Peninsula Regional Animal Shelter’s Adoption and Reunite Centers will close at 3 p.m. today. The Recovery Operations Center is also closing early. Essential employees are required to report on their normal schedule, while liberal leave has been authorized for others.

Public Works crews have been applying salt and de-icing materials to roads in anticipation of hazardous conditions. The Emergency Operations Center Team is closely monitoring the situation and will continue to provide updates as conditions develop.

To support individuals experiencing homelessness during the cold weather, the Four Oaks Day Service Center at 7401 Warwick Blvd. will remain open daily from 5:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., offering a warming shelter and support services. An additional overnight shelter option is available through the PORT Winter Shelter program operated by LINK of Hampton Roads at Hilton Baptist Church, located at 101 Main St.

Should a widespread power outage occur, the city plans to provide a shelter for residents in need.

The Celebration of Lights event at Newport News City Park is canceled for tonight due to weather concerns.

Residents are urged to take several safety precautions: stay informed through local news or city communication channels; travel only if necessary and ensure vehicles are equipped with winter supplies; keep emergency items like blankets and non-perishable food at home; check on elderly or disabled neighbors; and avoid downed power lines, reporting them immediately if encountered.

For ongoing updates, citizens can consult local news sources or visit the city’s website at www.nnva.gov.
