The James City County Police Department announced on April 10 that it will take part in National Prescription Drug Take Back Day, a nationwide initiative organized by the Drug Enforcement Administration. The event is scheduled for Saturday, April 25, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Law Enforcement Center located at 4600 Opportunity Way.
The event aims to provide residents with a safe and anonymous way to dispose of old, unwanted, or expired medications. Organizers say proper disposal helps prevent prescription drug misuse and accidental poisonings while also reducing environmental harm.
Community members are encouraged to bring tablets, capsules, patches, and other solid prescription medications for disposal. However, syringes, sharps, illicit drugs, and leaking or unsealed liquids will not be accepted. Liquid medications must remain sealed in their original containers.
According to the James City County Police Department’s announcement, unused medications stored at home are especially vulnerable to diversion and misuse by individuals who may obtain them from family or friends.
National Prescription Drug Take Back Day has removed more than 20.3 million pounds of medication from circulation over its sixteen-year history through partnerships with law enforcement agencies across the country.
