The James City County Police Department has announced plans to conduct a DUI checkpoint starting at 10 p.m. on Thursday, July 3, and continuing until 2 a.m. on Friday, July 4. The location chosen for this operation is an area in James City County that has seen previous incidents of impaired driving.

Checkpoint locations are determined by analyzing traffic data, crash patterns, and past enforcement related to DUIs. The main goal of the checkpoint is not arrests but rather to improve public safety by discouraging impaired driving through visible enforcement and engagement.

During the checkpoint operation, officers will make brief contact with drivers to check for signs of alcohol or drug impairment and verify driver’s licenses as required by law. The checkpoint will be clearly marked using law enforcement vehicles, traffic cones, and warning signs to ensure motorist safety and compliance with state regulations.

The department advises drivers that impairment can result from substances other than alcohol, including marijuana, certain prescription medications, and over-the-counter drugs. Drivers planning to consume any impairing substances are encouraged to arrange for a designated driver or use rideshare services.

DUI-related offenses carry consequences such as fines, court costs, license suspension, and the risk of serious injury or loss of life. “James City County Police are committed to protecting the public through education, high-visibility enforcement,” says the department’s statement regarding its prevention initiatives.
