The James City County Historical Commission has announced an essay contest for high school students living in either James City County or the City of Williamsburg. The contest is open to those in grades 9-12, including students attending public or private schools as well as those who are home-schooled.

Participants are required to submit essays of 1,000 to 1,500 words on one of three topics: the history of the railroad in James City County, early African American schools in the area, or the Battle of Greensprings and its significance during the Revolutionary War. Essays must include citations using the Chicago Manual of Style and a bibliography. Students should not include their names within the main body of their essays.

The commission states that generative AI may not be used for essay submissions. The deadline for entries is Monday, Dec. 15, 2025, at 11:59 p.m. Winners will be notified by Thursday, Jan. 15, 2026 and invited to a future meeting of the James City County Board of Supervisors for an award presentation.

Prizes include $1,500 for first place, $500 for second place and $250 for third place.

“The use of generative AI is not permitted.”
