James City County’s Board of Supervisors has approved a resolution to reintroduce an official county seal, according to an announcement made on October 28, 2025. The new seal will be used alongside the existing county logo as part of the county’s overall brand identity.

The newly approved seal is intended for formal uses, such as legal documents where a traditional seal may be required. Meanwhile, the current county logo will continue to appear on exterior signs, most printed materials, and other general applications. County staff completed the redesign internally with the aim of providing a more versatile branding option by offering both a modern logo and a formal seal.

The design of the new seal is based on a modified version of the previous county seal that was replaced in 2012. It features the Susan Constant—the largest ship that brought English colonists to Jamestown—inside a circle with “Jamestown 1607” below the waterline. The outer ring reads “James City County” and incorporates deeper shades of red, blue, and green taken from the current logo. These changes are intended to improve legibility in digital formats and allow for smooth integration into existing branding materials.

“The new County seal will not replace the current County logo; the two designs will be used together as part of the County’s branding. The seal will be used in formal applications, such as legal documents, where a traditional seal may be more appropriate. The County logo will remain on exterior signs, most print documents and other applications. This redesign was completed in-house by County staff, with the goal of improving versatility by offering a more formal option in addition to the modern design of the County logo,” according to information provided by James City County.
