Just in time for the Fourth of July weekend, the city of Hampton has unveiled a new playground at Buckroe Beach. The playground was designed with input from local residents, particularly those in the Buckroe neighborhood. This feedback was gathered through three public meetings and an online survey that received 500 responses.
The newly constructed playground offers improved accessibility for people with disabilities and includes sensory elements for children with special needs. Additionally, it features more shaded areas compared to its predecessor.
At the ribbon-cutting ceremony, Mayor Jimmy Gray stated: “We talked to our residents and we listened to what they had to say. The playground we’re opening here today is all new and very exciting, and I know that families will enjoy it for many, many years.”
The previous playground equipment was over two decades old and was removed at the end of the 2024 season. The new design integrates features that connect it to both the beach and park environments. These include a sand mound symbolizing a lifeguard stand and lighting similar to that at James T. Wilson Fishing Pier.
The playground is accessible daily from sunrise until sunset.
Residents can still collect their personalized pickets from the former fence. These are stored next to the Comfort Station, where pickups can be made on Sunday mornings or Wednesday evenings during specified hours. Alternatively, appointments can be arranged by calling 757-778-2538.
