A group of Hampton University track and field athletes participated in competitions in Florida and North Carolina, according to a May 3 announcement. The events took place as the university’s exam week came to an end, with only those students who had completed their exams able to attend.
The men’s 4×400 relay team competed at the East Coast Relays hosted by North Florida on Saturday. The team, consisting of Daniel Danner, Jason Woods, Dominic Bassey, and Jayden Poteat, finished fifth with a time of 3:09.87. They trailed teams from four Southeastern Conference schools: South Carolina, Florida, Tennessee, and Auburn.
At the Duke Twilight meet on Sunday in North Carolina, throwers represented Hampton University with several notable performances. Rochele Solmon placed seventh in the women’s discus event with a throw of 46.54 meters (152-8) and finished tenth in the shot put at 14.28 meters (46-10.25). Jaida Graham achieved fourth place in the women’s hammer throw with a personal best mark of 57.07 meters (187-3), while Delano Lawrence also secured fourth place in men’s discus after throwing a season-best distance of 54.83 meters (179-10).
Carmen PenaSoto was Hampton’s only track athlete at Duke Twilight outside of relays; she finished thirteenth in the women’s 400 meter hurdles with a time of 1:00.42.
According to organizers, the Pirates will next compete at the Liberty Twilight meet scheduled for Wednesday in Lynchburg.
