Riding public transportation will be free in Hampton Roads on June 19 to honor Juneteenth, a federal holiday. The initiative includes buses, light rail, ferry services, Paratransit, and OnDemand ridesharing provided by Hampton Roads Transit (HRT).

Juneteenth is one of four days each year when HRT offers fare-free transit. The other three days are Election Day on November 4, Transit Equity Day in February, and Earth Day in April.

Due to Juneteenth being recognized as both a state and federal holiday, the bus, light rail, and Base Express services will follow their Saturday schedules. However, the Elizabeth River Ferry will maintain its regular weekday operations. During this time, transit center information booths and access to administrative facilities will not be available.

The Customer Service Call Center of HRT can be reached from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at (757) 222-6100 for any inquiries.

Hampton Roads Transit aims “to connect Hampton Roads with transportation solutions that are reliable, safe, efficient and sustainable.” More details about their services can be found at gohrt.com.
