Hampton Roads Transit (HRT) has finished installing “smart stop” bus signs at more than 2,600 locations across six cities, including Portsmouth. The new signs allow riders to access real-time bus information and other features by scanning a QR code with their smartphones.

The QR codes provide access to route maps, schedules, HRT pass purchases, customer alerts, and the ability to report cleanliness or safety issues at stops. This technology is available for all fixed-route services such as the Elizabeth River Ferry, The Tide Light Rail, and Base Express service.

“HRT’s smart stops usher in a new era of convenience, innovation and mobility,” said William E. Harrell, HRT’s President and CEO. “This innovative, location-based technology, paired with visible and reflective signage, is designed to enhance the rider experience.”

The project began in October 2023 and was completed by June 2025. All design work and technology development were handled internally by HRT staff. The transition from old signage to the new system has resulted in savings of over $600,000 due to reduced material needs and maintenance costs.

HRT is among a small number of transit agencies nationwide using this type of technology paired with physical signage. The new design includes a single aluminum panel covered in reflective anti-graffiti vinyl for durability. Each sign displays a large QR code on the back and a unique stop number on both sides for easier identification.

With these upgrades, maintenance crews can now scan QR codes at each stop to confirm cleaning or report issues directly from the field. This process allows HRT to collect data in real time for better decision-making regarding stop conditions.

A demonstration event took place at the Children’s Museum of Virginia in Portsmouth, where an updated HRT bus exhibit now features branding from the agency’s 757 Express service along with one of the new smart stop signs.

HRT says its mission is to connect Hampton Roads communities through reliable and sustainable transportation solutions. More information about transit services can be found at gohrt.com.
