Hampton Roads is set to offer a safe transportation option during Cinco de Mayo celebrations. Drive Safe Hampton Roads (DSHR) will sponsor the 757 Sober Ride program powered by Lyft, providing free rides for individuals 21 and older who are celebrating. The service will be available from 6 PM on Monday, May 5, until 3 AM on Tuesday, May 6.
Those intending to use the service need to download the Lyft app and visit DSHR’s website for the promo code, which will be available starting at 6 PM on May 5. The ride, valued up to $15, must originate or have a destination within Hampton Roads and is subject to Lyft’s terms.
Statistics from Cinco de Mayo 2024 in Virginia recorded 373 crashes, resulting in two alcohol-related fatalities and 194 injuries. Bob Clinebell, President of Drive Safe Hampton Roads, encourages celebrants to “plan ahead. Enjoy Cinco de Mayo responsibly. Designate a sober driver ahead of time, call a sober friend or use DSHR’s 757 Sober Ride program to get home safely.”
Clinebell also emphasizes the importance of vigilance on the roads: “If you are the designated driver, commit to 100% sobriety to keep you and your friends safe. If you believe you see an impaired driver on the road, contact law enforcement immediately. If you have a friend who is about to drive impaired, take away their keys and help them to get home safely.”
The program is supported by Drive Safe Hampton Roads and Huffman & Huffman Brothers-in-Law and partially funded by the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles. The media is requested to refrain from posting the promo code online to ensure the safety of the campaign.
