July 3, 2025 — The city of Hampton has unveiled a new playground at Buckroe Beach just ahead of the Fourth of July weekend. The development was shaped by feedback from local residents, particularly those in the Buckroe neighborhood. Through three public meetings and an online survey with 500 responses, the design now includes better accessibility for people with disabilities and sensory elements for children with special needs. Additionally, it offers more shaded areas than its predecessor.
At the ribbon-cutting ceremony, Mayor Jimmy Gray expressed appreciation for community input: “We talked to our residents and we listened to what they had to say. The playground we’re opening here today is all new and very exciting, and I know that families will enjoy it for many, many years.”
The old playground equipment was over two decades old before being removed after the 2024 season. The new playground features elements that tie into the beach environment and nearby park facilities. These include a sand mound resembling a lifeguard stand and lights matching those at James T. Wilson Fishing Pier.
Open daily from sunrise to sunset, the playground is ready to welcome visitors.
Residents who wish to collect their personalized pickets from the previous fence can do so at designated times at the Comfort Station or by calling 757-778-2538 for an appointment.
