Hampton, Virginia, has been recognized as an All-America City for the fifth time. The announcement was made by the National Civic League during a ceremony in Denver on Sunday evening. Hampton previously received this designation in 1972, 2002, 2014, and 2023.

Mayor Jimmy Gray expressed his pride in the team that contributed to this achievement. “I’m so proud of this team that worked so hard, and everyone who put together the application and helped coordinate the presentation,” he said. He acknowledged the support from staff and residents, stating, “We are very proud of the dedication that has made us a five-time All-America City.”

The National Civic League has been awarding this honor for 76 years to highlight civic engagement and community resilience. This year’s theme focused on how community engagement advances environmental sustainability and resilience.

Hampton’s entry included a written submission that secured its place among 20 finalists. A delegation led by Mayor Gray and City Manager Mary Bunting traveled to Denver to present their initiatives alongside other cities recognized for sustainability efforts.

On Saturday, Hampton’s delegation presented their innovative approaches to addressing sea level rise challenges in their coastal community. The judges were impressed with their efforts and awarded them the All-America City title on Sunday evening.

City Manager Bunting emphasized that the award recognizes communities committed to citizen engagement rather than perfection. “Hampton leads the nation in these practices,” she said.

The judges highlighted several of Hampton’s initiatives addressing sea level rise: “Through efforts like the Hampton Clean City Commission and the Phoebus Living Shoreline project, residents of all ages help lead cleanups, grow community gardens, and design more resilient public spaces.” They also noted efforts in Aberdeen Gardens to protect homes and heritage through a resident-informed resilience plan.

Celebrations are planned in coming months to honor this recognition within Hampton. Other winners include Kinston, Carrboro, Jacksonville (North Carolina), Seattle; Akron (Ohio); Chelsea (Massachusetts); Memphis; Tallahassee; and Port St. Lucie (Florida).
