The Hampton University men’s lacrosse team will play its last away game of the season against Hofstra on Saturday, according to an April 17 announcement. The Pirates are aiming to build on their progress this year as they approach the end of their schedule.
This matchup comes after Hofstra won last year’s meeting with a score of 27-4. Canyon Steverson scored for Hampton in that contest. Freshman Anthony Bardonille, Jr. leads the Pirates with 26 goals this season and is tied for second nationally among freshmen in goals scored. Maliik Wood and Darius Stanley have also reached double digits in goals, while Wood leads the team with 10 assists.
In goal, Miles Lancaster has recorded 159 saves so far and recently had a standout performance with 21 saves against nationally ranked Towson. Edward Johnson has also contributed between the posts, saving 21 shots over three games at a .600 save percentage. On defense, Judah Johnson-Nixon leads with 11 caused turnovers.
Bardonille Jr.’s strong freshman campaign puts him in position to set a new school record for goals in a single season; he is currently tied for first place at Hampton and has twice been named Colonial Athletic Association Rookie of the Week this year. The team’s offensive production has improved notably under first-year head coach Vincent Culpepper, averaging more than eight goals per game compared to less than five last season.
Hofstra enters Saturday’s contest with a record of three wins and nine losses overall (1-3 conference). Trevor Natalie leads their scoring efforts with 25 goals while Anthony Mollica adds both scoring and assists. Goalkeeper Shea Kennedy holds a .498 save percentage through all twelve starts this year.
Looking ahead, Hampton will conclude its regular season next Friday by hosting Stony Brook.
