The City of Hampton has announced its participation in a regional initiative to address homelessness across the Virginia Peninsula. This move follows the Virginia Peninsula Homelessness Study conducted by VIAM Advising, which provides an analysis of homelessness in several areas including Newport News, Hampton, Poquoson, Williamsburg, James City County, and York County.

The study points out that the primary cause of homelessness in the region is the lack of affordable housing. Other factors contributing to the issue include substance abuse and unemployment. It also highlights gaps in services and offers recommendations for policy and program development to tackle these challenges effectively.

In response to these findings, the Peninsula Chief Administrative Officers (CAOs) have formed a regional workgroup made up of professionals in the field of homelessness. The group is responsible for creating a coordinated strategy to remove barriers to services and align with regional priorities aimed at reducing homelessness. Recommendations from this workgroup are expected within 90 days.

Hampton is committed to this collaborative approach, understanding that addressing homelessness requires efforts that cross municipal boundaries. The city plans to continue working closely with neighboring jurisdictions to implement solutions based on data that serve the community effectively.

For those interested in reviewing the full findings and recommendations, the complete report and presentation materials are available online:

Hampton encourages community members to engage with these resources and take part in ongoing discussions as they work together towards reducing homelessness in the region.
