Hampton’s Department of Human Services has released a statement about the effects of the federal government shutdown, which began on October 1, on local services and resources.
According to the department, the Virginia Department of Social Services has indicated that the status of November Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits remains uncertain until federal funding is restored. The department stated, “The federal shutdown is not just a local issue and it is affecting families, workers, and communities nationwide. We will communicate any updates or changes that impact services.”
Currently, residents who have SNAP benefits loaded on their Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) cards can continue to use them to buy food. However, Hampton’s Department of Human Services does not have additional information at this time regarding the future of these benefits.
The department also noted that no new information has been received about other essential programs, such as Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) and Medicaid.
Residents and families in need of food assistance can find available resources through the Virginia Peninsula Foodbank.
