The City of Hampton has expressed its disagreement with the recent designation as a sanctuary jurisdiction by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. The city officials argue that this classification is inaccurate and does not reflect the city’s policies or practices.

“The City of Hampton is aware that it has been named by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security as a ‘sanctuary jurisdiction’. We strongly reject this classification and have contacted regional Homeland Security officials requesting an explanation,” stated city representatives.

City officials emphasized that Hampton has not implemented any ordinance, policy, or resolution to identify itself as a sanctuary city. Furthermore, they clarified that there has been no denial of access to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) at any jail facilities in Hampton, which participates in a regional jail system housing ICE detainees. “Hampton maintains open lines of communication between our Police Department and regional Homeland Security personnel,” they added.

The statement from the city underscored its commitment to uphold the rule of law while ensuring a safe and welcoming environment for residents. Officials reiterated their stance against being labeled as a sanctuary jurisdiction and expressed willingness to provide necessary information to correct what they consider a mischaracterization.
