The City of Hampton, together with Newport News, has been awarded a Gold Excellence in Economic Development Award by the International Economic Development Council (IEDC). The recognition is for their joint efforts in supporting the expansion of Liebherr Mining Equipment, a company specializing in mining technology whose facility spans both cities.

The award will be presented at the IEDC 2025 Annual Conference scheduled for September in Detroit, Michigan. The category for the award is “Regional or Cross-Border Partnership,” acknowledging the cooperation between Hampton and Newport News on economic development projects that cross municipal boundaries.

Liebherr’s $72.3 million investment in its Hampton Roads site aims to grow operations and meet global demand by transitioning to battery-powered mining trucks. Because the company’s location straddles both cities, collaboration was necessary not only between Hampton and Newport News but also with state authorities.

“Hampton is incredibly honored to receive this recognition from the International Economic Development Council,” said Hampton Mayor Jimmy Gray. “The Liebherr expansion is a shining example of what can be accomplished when regional partners come together with a shared vision for growth and innovation. This award celebrates not just a project, but a partnership that is building a stronger future for our entire region.”

“This award is a testament to the collaboration, commitment, and strategic planning that went into making the Liebherr expansion a reality,” added Hampton City Manager Mary Bunting. “It reflects the strength of our cross-border partnerships and the dedication of everyone involved—from local leaders to regional stakeholders. We are proud to be part of this success story.”

Officials say this recognition underscores Hampton’s role in promoting economic development across Hampton Roads by working beyond city borders to help attract major companies, create jobs, and boost competitiveness within the region.

Each year, IEDC recognizes organizations and collaborations that have significant effects on communities worldwide through awards such as this one.
