Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin has declared a state of emergency to address hunger relief needs following the announcement that Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits will end for Virginians starting November 1 due to the federal government shutdown.

The emergency declaration allows the governor to use emergency funds and continue providing some benefits. Residents are encouraged to manage their current SNAP benefits carefully, focusing on essential, nonperishable foods. The Virginia Fresh Match program enables participants to double their SNAP dollars when purchasing fresh produce.

People can check their Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) balance by visiting www.ConnectEBT.com, using the ConnectEBT mobile app, reviewing their latest store receipt, or calling 1-866-281-2448. For those seeking food assistance, resources are available through the Virginia Peninsula Foodbank at www.hrfoodbank.org or by calling 757-596-7188. Additional support is accessible by contacting 2-1-1 Virginia or visiting www.211Virginia.org for information on local food pantries and assistance programs.

Hampton residents may also reach out to Healthy Families Hampton at 757-727-1300 for further family support services. Updates regarding available resources and developments will be posted at www.hampton.gov/humanservices and on Facebook @HamptonVA.

Community members who wish to help can donate to the Virginia Peninsula Foodbank, where each dollar contributed provides up to four meals for families in need.

According to city officials: “The City of Hampton and the Department of Human Services remain committed to supporting residents through this challenging time and will continue to share verified updates as new information becomes available.”
