An Extreme Heat Warning is in effect from June 23 at 10 a.m. through June 25 at 8 p.m., according to the National Weather Service. In response, cooling centers have been made available for citizens and visitors seeking relief from the heat.

Residents can find refuge at the James City County Recreation Center or the Williamsburg Regional Library during their operating hours. It should be noted that pets, with the exception of service animals, are not permitted inside these facilities.

The Virginia Department of Health has issued several recommendations to prevent heat-related illnesses as temperatures rise. They advise drinking plenty of water while avoiding beverages with caffeine, high sugar content, or alcohol due to their dehydrating effects.

Staying indoors in cool environments is crucial on hot days. Those without air conditioning at home are encouraged to spend time in air-conditioned public spaces like libraries or movie theaters during peak heat hours.

Wearing lightweight and light-colored clothing can help deflect some of the sun’s energy. The department also suggests using hats or umbrellas for additional protection and applying sunscreen on exposed skin.

Physical activity should be limited in extreme heat, particularly during midday. If outdoor work is unavoidable, staying hydrated by consuming 2-4 glasses of water each hour and taking frequent breaks in shaded or cool areas is recommended.

Leaving children or pets unattended in vehicles poses significant risks as temperatures inside can rapidly exceed 150 degrees, leading to heat stroke or death.

Finally, checking on neighbors is advised since certain groups, such as those aged 65 or older, face higher risks of heat-related illnesses during periods of intense heat and humidity.
