A Coastal Flood Watch has been issued by the National Weather Service in Wakefield for Hampton and nearby areas. The advisory is in effect from Thursday afternoon, August 21, through Friday afternoon, August 22.

The watch warns that low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways could see between one and two feet of water above ground level. The flooding may result in numerous road closures. Homes and businesses situated in flood-prone zones could be inundated, and some shoreline erosion is possible.

Residents are advised to plan for extra travel time as some roads may be closed. Authorities caution against driving around barricades or through water of unknown depth. To protect property, residents should use sandbags, secure outdoor items, and move valuables to higher ground.

Officials recommend preparing an emergency kit with food, water, medications, and flashlights. Cell phones and other devices should be fully charged in case of power outages. Residents using generators are reminded to ensure they have enough fuel and to operate them outdoors away from windows and doors.

For assistance or information related to city services or storm impacts, residents can contact Hampton 311 at (757) 727-8311. Non-emergency police matters can be directed to (757) 727-6111. Power outages should be reported to Dominion Energy at 1-866-DOM-HELP (1-866-366-4357), while Newport News Waterworks can assist with water service issues at (757) 926-1000.

The City of Hampton encourages everyone to follow its communication channels and monitor local media for updates on weather conditions.
