The National Weather Service in Wakefield has issued a coastal flood advisory for Hampton and nearby areas, effective from 7 a.m. Thursday, August 21, through 5 p.m. Friday, August 22. A wind advisory is also in effect from 4 a.m. to 10 p.m. Thursday.
Hurricane Erin is expected to affect beaches and other coastal regions in the area. The Fort Monroe Authority has closed water access at Outlook Beach, but guests may still visit the beach itself. Water access at Buckroe and Grandview beaches will be closed starting at sunset.
The James T. Wilson Fishing Pier at Buckroe Beach is closed to the public until weather conditions improve.
Trash collection scheduled for Thursday will continue as planned; however, residents are asked not to place bulk items curbside until after the storm passes.
According to officials, low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways could see one to three feet of water above ground level. Numerous road closures may occur due to flooding or high winds, with north winds forecasted between 20 and 30 mph and gusts up to 45 mph. There is potential for some shoreline erosion as well as inundation of low-lying homes and businesses.
Residents are advised to allow extra time for travel since some roads may be closed during this period. Authorities warn against driving around barricades or through standing water of unknown depth. People living in flood-prone properties should consider using sandbags, securing outdoor items, and moving valuables to higher ground.
Emergency preparedness steps include assembling an emergency kit with food, water, medications, and flashlights; fully charging cell phones and devices ahead of possible power outages; ensuring enough fuel for generators while operating them safely outdoors away from windows and doors.
