City officials announced that the James T. Wilson Fishing Pier at Buckroe Beach, along with Hampton’s Buckroe, Grandview, and Outlook beaches, will reopen to the public at 4 p.m. today following Hurricane Erin. However, access to the water remains restricted due to ongoing strong winds and hazardous surf conditions.

Swimming, wading, paddlecraft, and launching motorized vessels from city beaches are prohibited until sunrise on Friday. Officials stated that although the region did not receive a direct hit from Hurricane Erin, high winds have created potentially dangerous conditions near the water.

Residents are advised to enjoy the beach from the sand but to avoid entering the water until restrictions are lifted. The city also urges people to obey posted signs and instructions from staff and public safety officials, stay off jetties and rock groins due to continued dangerous surf and rip currents, and report hazards such as downed trees or lines, flooding, or impassable roads by calling Hampton 3-1-1 at (757) 727-8311.

For non-emergency police assistance, residents can call (757) 727-6111. Power outages should be reported to Dominion Energy at 1-866-366-4357. Water service issues should be directed to Newport News Waterworks at (757) 926-1000.

“We will provide updates if conditions change. Thank you for your cooperation,” city officials said.
