The City of Newport News Department of Communications has received six Merit Awards from the Hampton Roads Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA). The awards were presented at the chapter’s annual program, which honors public relations and strategic communication efforts across the region.
The city was recognized in several categories, including its daily digital newsletter “Newport News Now,” joint messaging with Newport News Public Schools on immigration and support, crisis communications during Winter Storm Kingston, a social media campaign supporting “The Great Food Truck Race” filming in Newport News, the State of the City publication, and a cost-effective campaign for the Grow Your Own Food event.
Jody Saunders, the new Director of Communications, and Cleder Jones, recently retired Director who led several award-winning projects, attended the ceremony. Their participation marked both ongoing excellence and leadership continuity within the department.
“These awards reflect the dedication and innovation of our Communications Team, as well as the strong collaboration across city departments and with our community partners,” said City Manager Alan K. Archer. “Effective communication is essential to good governance. I’m proud of the work being done each day to ensure our residents receive clear, accurate, and meaningful information.”
The PRSA Hampton Roads Chapter’s annual awards are known for recognizing high standards in public relations planning and execution. PRSA is considered a leading professional body for communicators nationwide.
