The City of Hampton has issued a warning about a scam involving fraudulent emails sent to applicants, developers, and business owners. According to the city, scammers are impersonating the City of Hampton Planning Department and requesting wire transfers or additional payments for permits and applications.

City officials clarified that they do not send emails asking for wire transfers. All legitimate correspondence from the city will come from an email address ending in @hampton.gov. The official fee schedules are available on the city’s website, and payments should only be made through authorized city processes.

Residents who receive suspicious emails are advised not to respond or send money. Instead, they should report the email to the Hampton Police Division’s Non-Emergency number at 757-727-6111 or forward it to [email protected] for review.

“The City of Hampton is committed to protecting residents, business owners, and developers from fraud. Please share this information with colleagues, contractors, and partners who may be applying for permits or working with the city,” stated officials.

For any questions regarding official permit fees or procedures, individuals can contact the Community Development Department at 757-728-5244.
