The City of Hampton has issued a warning about a scam targeting individuals and businesses involved in permit applications. According to city officials, fraudulent emails are being sent that appear to come from the City of Hampton Planning Department, requesting wire transfers or extra payments for permits and applications.

City representatives clarified that they do not request wire transfers by email. All official correspondence from the city will use an email address ending in @hampton.gov. The city’s legitimate fee schedules are publicly available on their website, and payments are only accepted through official channels.

Officials advise recipients of suspicious emails not to respond or send money. Instead, residents are encouraged to report such emails to the Hampton Police Division’s Non-Emergency number at 757-727-6111 or forward them to [email protected] for review.

“The City of Hampton is committed to protecting residents, business owners, and developers from fraud. Please share this information with colleagues, contractors, and partners who may be applying for permits or working with the city,” the statement said.

For questions regarding official permit fees or processes, individuals can contact the Community Development Department at 757-728-5244.
