The City of Hampton has issued a warning about a scam targeting applicants, developers, and business owners. According to the city, fraudulent emails are being sent that appear to come from the City of Hampton Planning Department. These messages request wire transfers or additional payments for permits and applications.

City officials emphasize that they do not send emails requesting wire transfers. They also note that all official correspondence will come from an email address ending in @hampton.gov. The city’s legitimate fee schedules are publicly available, and payments are accepted only through official city processes.

Residents who receive suspicious emails are advised not to respond or send money. Instead, they should report the scam email to the Hampton Police Division’s Non-Emergency number at 757-727-6111 or forward suspicious messages to [email protected] for review.

“The City of Hampton is committed to protecting residents, business owners, and developers from fraud. Please share this information with colleagues, contractors, and partners who may be applying for permits or working with the city,” officials said.

For any questions about permit fees or processes, individuals can contact the Community Development Department at 757-728-5244.
