City officials announced that the James T. Wilson Fishing Pier at Buckroe Beach will reopen to the public at 4 p.m. today, following the lessening impact of Hurricane Erin. Hampton’s beaches—Buckroe, Grandview, and Outlook—will also be accessible starting at that time.

Despite these reopenings, water access remains restricted due to ongoing strong wind gusts and hazardous surf conditions. Swimming, wading, paddlecraft use, and launching motorized vessels from city beaches are prohibited until sunrise on Friday.

Authorities noted that while the region did not experience a direct hit from Hurricane Erin, winds have created potentially dangerous conditions near the water. The city is asking residents and visitors to enjoy the beach from the sand but not enter the water until restrictions are lifted. People are also advised to obey posted signs and instructions from staff and public safety officials, stay off jetties and rock groins due to dangerous surf and rip currents, and report hazards such as downed trees or lines, flooding, or impassable roads by calling Hampton 3-1-1 at (757) 727-8311.

For non-emergency police assistance, residents can call (757) 727-6111. Power outages should be reported to Dominion Energy at 1-866-366-4357, while water service issues can be directed to Newport News Waterworks at (757) 926-1000.

Officials stated they will provide updates if conditions change. “Thank you for your cooperation.”
