Assistant Police Chief Tony Dallman to retire after more than three decades with James City County

James City County Assistant Police Chief Anthony G. “Tony” Dallman will retire after more than three decades of service with the James City County Police Department. His active-duty service will end on December 16, with his official retirement date set for March 1, 2026.

Dallman began his career with the department in 1995 as a patrol officer in the Uniform Division. He served five years before being promoted to Sergeant and then advanced to Lieutenant in 2001. In April 2014, he became Major, and in June 2022 he was named Assistant Police Chief.

During his tenure, Dallman held several leadership positions, including supervising all three patrol shifts of the Uniform Division for eight years and leading the Community Services Unit for six years. He also acted as Interim Chief during a transition period within the department. His assignments have included roles such as Patrol Officer, Radar Instructor, Taser Instructor, Field Training Officer, Internal Affairs Investigator, and Crisis Negotiator.

Dallman’s professional development includes earning a bachelor’s degree in Physics from Mary Washington College and a master’s degree in Criminal Justice from Troy University in 2013. He is also a graduate of the Professional Executive Leadership School at the University of Richmond and attended the FBI National Academy (257th session).

Outside his police work, Dallman is recognized as a husband and father of two adult sons. Throughout his career he has been known for sharing his expertise as well as humor and steady leadership within both the department and community.
