Newport News City Manager Alan K. Archer announced the launch of the “Breakthrough Bonus” program, offering up to $5,750 in tiered bonuses for individuals hired into full-time positions requiring a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). Archer stated, “The innovative Breakthrough Bonus program addresses gaps and fills critical positions. Our hope is that the talented employees we attract through the initiative will be integral parts of Team Newport News for years to come.”

Employees hired into CDL-required positions will receive bonuses over four years, starting with $500 after completing new employee orientation. The bonus amounts incrementally increase each year, with $750 in Year One, $1,000 in Year Two, $1,500 in Year Three, and $2,000 in Year Four.

Newport News is currently seeking to fill 565 vacancies, with 103 requiring a CDL. The Public Works Department is actively recruiting asphalt finishers and pipelayers, while other departments such as Engineering, General Services, and Waterworks are also in need of CDL holders.

Director of Human Resources, Allison Dichoso, emphasized the aim of building a culture of retention through the program, stating, “While the referral money is attractive, our overall goal is to build a culture of retention. By strategically including existing employees in the hiring process, we are providing a personal connection to the success and investment in the growth of our city.”

Existing city employees who refer individuals hired for CDL positions will receive incentives as well. They will earn $500 upon the hire of their referral and an additional $750 after the referred individual completes their first year of employment.

Newport News offers a training program to help individuals obtain a CDL, with applicants required to secure a CDL permit before their first day of employment. The city will provide ongoing training and funding to assist new employees in obtaining their CDL.
