Top-Ranked and Defending National Champion Captains Open Home Schedule With 1-0 Loss to Pfeiffer

Christopher Newport University opened its home softball schedule Thursday afternoon at Captains Park. The defending National Champions and Pfeiffer University battled in the first game of the Cross Bay Bash on a sunny and cool afternoon. A classic pitcher's duel was decided by a seventh-inning home run, as the Falcons walked away with a 1-0 triumph.

Falcons rightfielder Caiti Mickles delivered the lone run of the game, a leadoff solo shot on a line drive over the left-center field fence in the top of the seventh. It was one of only three hits off Pfeiffer bats all afternoon, and improved the Falcons to 11-4 on the season.

Keith Parr's squad, now 3-2, was held to five hits, all singles, by Pfeiffer pitcher Kenzi Lyall, who went the distance and improved her record to 4-3 for the year. Lyall walked five CNU batters and also recorded five strikeouts, and stranded 13 Captains runners on base. She had just one clean inning, retiring the Captains in order in the second frame.

Christopher Newport sophomore starter Kate Alger suffered the first loss of her career after going 15-0 in the circle as a freshman last year. Alger yielded just three hits and struck out seven, but Mickles' long ball made her the tough-luck losing pitcher and dropped Alger to 2-1 on the season.

Junior third baseman Brooke Greaver posted two singles for CNU, and also reached base when she was hit by a pitch.

Thursday's loss snapped CNU's 32-game home winning streak, which dated back to April 1, 2021, when the Captains fell to Bridgewater, 2-1, in the second game of a twin bill. Last year, in Christopher Newport's 47-1 National Championship season, the Captains registered a 26-0 record at Captains Park.

The Cross Bay Bash will continue on Friday at Captains Park with three games scheduled beginning at 10:30 a.m. The Captains return to the field for a 3:30 p.m. game Friday vs. eighth-ranked Millikin.
